Press Release – NID Training takes new direction

NID TRAINING TAKES NEW DIRECTION

As a flagship organisation for services to the Deaf and persons with hearing loss in South Africa, the National Institute for the Deaf (NID) is required to continually ensure that services to the Deaf are delivered effectively and with sustainable impact at all times within government policy.

In this regard and after careful consideration the decision was made that restructuring of NID’s current training model is essential for expansion. During recent strategic discussions and planning the conclusion was made that NID Training’s on-campus residential model needs to be adapted to make provision to serve more students through provincial training units (distance learning). The on-campus residential model will be adapted over a period of time. It has been decided that the on-campus residential model will continue until December 2019 and thereafter training will only be made available at a larger number of provincial training units. The on-campus residential training programs will still serve all current enrolled students until their studies are completed. Training programs will be expanded to regions where there are sufficient training needs and funding in order to provide training to the Deaf and persons with hearing loss cost-effectively and with greater impact.

The NID business units will therefore no longer serve as practical development and training units for the on-campus Deaf students as intended and will also be adapted over time. In preparation there of client services to the public will be discontinued on 31 March 2019 at the following NID business units: Woodwork, Joinery and Upholstery, Beauty Salon, Nursery and Vegetable Processing. The NID Tea Garden and Laundry will not be affected and their services to the public will continue.

The NID Management and Board of Directors trust that the above mentioned restructuring process of NID Training will be implemented successfully and will be beneficial by means of greater reach, affordable deaf-accessible training and resources, and a remarkable greater impact in the future and lives of its Deaf beneficiaries.
