SoCoMo training

The Social Competency Model (SoCoMo) which is being applied in the NID departments since 2000 is a unique way for people’s potential to be recognised, to change unwanted behaviour into desired behaviour and for social skills to be acquired. SoCoMo’s origins are rooted in the Netherlands, but NID has since adapted it for the South African context and made it Deaf accessible. NID was also able to get our SoCoMo program accredited by the University of Stellenbosch this year which means that more organisations can now benefit from this training. CPD accreditation of 30 points has been approved for attendance and completion by professionals such as social workers.

Former NID student excels in workplace

An aspiring master chef is now closer to achieving his dreams thanks to the dedication of NID Training staff and his own can-do attitude.

In his heart Evashin Naidoo always knew that he wanted to become a professional chef and in the beginning of 2014 he enrolled at NID Training for the Assistant Chef Programme. He has since completed his studies and is doing an internship at Tsogo Sun Garden Court Marine Parade Hotel in Durban where he has impressed management to the extent of being offered a full-time position at the hotel!

Evashin is Hard of Hearing and with excellent verbal communication skills (and little sign language). From the outset, he showed great potential in the kitchen. After he successfully completed the Assistant Chef Programme, Evashin progressed to Level 4 Professional Cookery during 2015. He excelled.

His friendly, outgoing and confident personality made him hugely popular with students and staff alike. Evashin participated in the annual Mr & Miss NID College Pageant twice and was crowned 1st Prince in 2015.

Evashin told his facilitator that he wants to be a master chef one day. After successfully completing his final assessment, he started an internship at Tsogo Sun Garden Court Marine Parade Hotel in Durban earlier this year. The head chef and management are so impressed with him that they already offered him a full time position!

We expect great things for this amazing young man.
