CYCLE TELETHON 2018

On Friday 31 August and Saturday 01 September NID held our annual Cycle Telethon fundraising project in the Mountain Mill Shopping Centre, Worcester.

The project involves 4 teams of 9 Deaf cyclists each cycling for 24 hours from Friday 14:00 to Saturday 14:00 on exercise bicycles in the shopping centre. The teams compete against each other to cycle the furthest distance in the 24 hours. During the cycling we have a phoning program where tele-marketers (mostly staff with a few volunteers) phone donors, partners and friends and ask them to pledge a contribution towards the project. Previous donors are challenged on their previous gifts or to better the pledge and new donors (who are challenged by existing donors/pledgers) are asked to become involved through a contribution.

The aim of the project is to raise funds for multiple-disabled Deaf adults at NID and secondly to create awareness of NID and what we do for the Deaf and persons with hearing loss through our various departments.

This year the team from De la Bat School for the Deaf was crowned the winners. The total amount of R 200 000 has been pledged and received thus far.

You can still help make a difference: SMS / WhatsApp your donation pledge to 082 947 8846 or email to pa.deputy@nid.org.za for more information.

SCHOOLS PROJECT

Schools Project – pledge a fundraising project of your choice in support of NID.

The NID Schools Project involves schools taking on a fundraising project of their choice in support of NID. Projects may vary from a social day, coin laying, hosting a dance or anything easy that could easily slot into the school’s annual programme.

Schools can also get involved in the NID Change for Change project. The project involves the filling of small Change 4 Change money boxes with all the small and annoying change, which fill our wallets.

This project is however not limited to school participation. Colleges, universities, service organisations or any type of group can also get involved and donate the funds collected from their project to NID as a special gift.

RUN FOR THE DEAF

RUN FOR THE DEAF

This year, NID’s “Run for the Deaf” projects kicked off with the third Red vs Blue run which took place on 27 March 2018. This 6km fun run that was held for the first time in 2016, is already highly popular and is unlike any other: The winners are not those who finish first, but are determined by whether male (Blue) or female (Red) participants finish in the majority!  In 2017, the gents kicked sand in the face of the ladies and were crowned as champs, but this year the ladies evened the score.

On 31 March 30 athletes took part in the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon and raised R 94 000 in total to the benefit of NID.

The NID Dusk & Dawn Trail Run will take place again on 23 and 24 November 2018.

PLEDGE YOUR BIRTHDAY

Pledge your birthday, nominate NID as beneficiary and request your family and friends to rather give a “gift” in support of NID, in celebration of your special day and in celebration of our 137th year of helping the Deaf and people with hearing loss.

We once received a donation from a new friend of the Deaf on request of one of her friends who celebrated his birthday. He had told his family and friends that he had received enough gifts and blessings over the years, and that the money they would have spent on him for a birthday gift, should rather go to a worthy cause. Special gestures like these are one of the ways that has made it possible for NID to make a difference in the lives of the Deaf and persons with hearing loss for the last 137 years.

Please consider following this example and doing the same. Pledge your birthday, nominate NID as beneficiary and request your family and friends to give a “gift” in support of our good cause and in celebration of our 137th year of helping the Deaf and people with hearing loss.

To pledge your birthday, email pa.deputy@nid.org.za.

RUN FOR THE DEAF – MARATHON TOUR

From 28 September 2017 to 10 October 2017 a group of 19 runners from the Western Cape in South Africa will be touring Denmark and Sweden. These dedicated athletes will take part in the Hans Christian Andersen Marathon in Odense and the Skogsmaran in Gothenburg, Sweden. The main focus of the group during this tour is to raise funds for the care of Deaf adults with multiple disabilities at the National Institute for the Deaf (NID) in Worcester.

Their beneficiaries include persons with hearing impairment as well as physical, mental or visual disabilities. Services offered by NID are: Private post-school training to Deaf youth through programs aimed at career paths & employability which is demonstrated in our Business Training units. Care provided to multi-disabled adults and elderly Deaf. Integrated Support Services offering support services on campus as well as the broader Deaf community through a systemic, holistic approach that focuses on removing barriers to access and participation as well as supporting sustainable integration into community life.

The athletes have been training hard for months to be fit and ready for the marathons. This is the 5th time that they take part in marathons in Europe to raise funds and awareness for the advantage of these people who are in desperate need of support.

We herewith invite and request you to support this initiative of raising funds by asking you to donate an amount towards this worthy cause.  In doing so, you will directly contribute to the care of these vulnerable people.
